What inspired this project?
When scouring for ideas on a possible topic I was passionate about, I somehow remembered a poem I’d heard about a year ago, read out at a talent show. It had hit me quite hard- really struck a nerve. Simply the way that the words flowed, drawing out my emotions and making me really consider the issue. That poem was entitled ‘To This Day’ by Shane Koyczan, a spoken word artist from Canada. As a self-labelled ‘former fat kid’, he had faced years of bullying and channelled all these emotions into a poem with the purpose of inspiring others and starting a movement. It protested about society’s views on bullying and how easily it’s dismissed as just ‘boys being boys’ and ‘all part of growing up’. This is what sparked my interest in protest poetry as I found other poems linking to protest. Additionally, I decided to conduct some research on the history behind this, and to see how the people before us had communicated protest.
